Understanding ISRI Specifications for Aluminium Scrap in Indian Foundries

A complete guide to ISRI scrap codes including Tense, Tabour, Talon, and Taste for secondary smelters and die-casting operations.

Understanding ISRI Specifications for Aluminium Scrap in Indian Foundries

The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) establishes standardized worldwide terminology that eliminates ambiguity in international metal scrap contracts. For Indian foundries and recyclers, understanding these specifications is essential for precise melt formulation and yield optimization.

Core ISRI Aluminium Scrap Designations

  • Tense: Clean, mixed old alloy sheet aluminium or cast aluminium components. Must be free from foil, venetian blinds, castings, hair wire, and iron attachments. Sourced from dismantled automotive castings and structural parts. See our Tense & Tabour Scrap Guide.
  • Tabour: Clean aluminium machining turnings and borings. Must be free of excessive iron, oil, moisture, or dirt, with moisture typically constrained under 3%.
  • Talon: Clean, unalloyed aluminium wire and cable scrap, practically free of hair wire, iron, and foreign insulation. Offers high electrical conductivity.
  • Taste: Clean aluminium wire scrap containing specified alloy elements, compressed into dense bales for efficient furnace charging. See our Alloy Wire Scrap Overview.

By specifying exact ISRI grades in purchase agreements, foundries ensure that container deliveries drop directly into production without costly secondary segregation.
